 16. Briefly explain the payment of service tax and filing of returns.

Service tax is a tax collected by the government on the services you provide. You must pay this tax by specific dates and report your activity in a document called a return. [1, 2]



1. Payment of Service Tax
  • Payment Schedule: Corporations pay monthly. Individuals and small partnerships pay every quarter.
  • Due Dates: You must pay the tax by the 5th of the month after your payment period ends. If you use online banking, you get an extra day.
  • How to Pay: You pay online through the CBIC ACES Portal or the EASIEST Portal using a challan. [3, 4, 5, 6, 7]
2. Filing of Returns
  • What to File: You must file a form called ST-3. This shows the total money you made and the tax you paid.
  • Filing Schedule: You file this form every half-year (twice a year).
  • Due Dates: The deadlines are the 25th of April and the 25th of October.
  • How to File: You must file this form online at the CBIC ACES Portal . You must file even if you did not earn any money (called a Nil return). [3, 8, 9, 10, 11]
Late Fees
If you file your return late, you will have to pay a penalty. This fine can be between $10 to $100 per day, depending on how late you are. [12, 13]
