What is copyright ?

Copyright is a legal right that grants creators exclusive control over their original, fixed creative works, such as books, music, and art. It protects the expression of an idea, not the idea itself, and gives the owner the right to reproduce, distribute, and adapt the work. This protection encourages creativity by providing creators with economic incentives and control over how their work is used.
What copyright protects

• Literary works: Books, articles, poems, and computer programs
• Artistic works: Paintings, drawings, photographs, and sculptures
• Musical works: Compositions and sound recordings
• Audiovisual works: Films, movies, and videos
• Dramatic works: Plays and musicals
• Other works: Advertisements, maps, and technical drawings

Key aspects of copyright

• Originality: The work must be an original creation, meaning it was independently created by a human author and has a minimal degree of creativity.
• Fixation: The work must be "fixed" in a tangible form, such as being written down or recorded. Ideas, titles, names, and slogans are generally not copyrightable.
• Automatic protection: In most cases, copyright protection begins automatically as soon as the work is created and fixed, without the need for registration.
• Exclusive rights: The copyright holder has the exclusive right to do and to authorize others to do the following:

 • Reproduce the work
 • Distribute copies of the work
 • Perform the work publicly
 • Display the work publicly
 • Create derivative works (adaptations)

• Duration: The length of protection varies, but in the U.S., it typically lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years.

Why copyright is important

• Incentivizes creativity: It provides economic incentives for creators to produce and share new works.
• Protects creators' rights: It gives creators control over their creations and prevents unauthorized use.
• Benefits the public: By encouraging the creation of new works, copyright ultimately benefits the public by increasing the amount of knowledge and culture available.
