What is ethics

Ethics is the philosophical study of moral principles and values that define what is right and wrong, good and bad. It's a framework for making decisions and provides a set of norms for conduct that distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable behavior, both in personal and professional life. While law often overlaps with ethics, ethics goes beyond the law to address questions about what one should do, even if an action isn't illegal. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Key concepts in ethics

• Moral philosophy: A branch of philosophy that investigates normative questions about what people ought to do.

• Norms: The rules or standards of behavior that guide individuals and groups. [2, 6]

• Values: Beliefs and principles that influence choices and are often at the core of ethical dilemmas. [1]

• Reason and logic: Ethics is grounded in systematic reflection on moral standards and values, using logic and reasoning to assess actions and character. [6]

How ethics is applied

• Research: Ethical standards in research promote the aims of knowledge and truth while protecting participants and ensuring accountability. [2]

• Professions: Many professions, like medicine, law, and journalism, have specific codes of ethics that members must follow. [5, 7]

• Business: Businesses are encouraged to develop an ethical culture to ensure fair treatment of employees, customers, and suppliers, and to make ethical choices in their operations. [3, 8]

• Daily life: Ethics influences personal decisions, encouraging individuals to consider the impact of their actions on others and to strive for positive contributions to society. [3]

Ethics vs. legality

• Law: Defines what is legally permissible. [4]

• Ethics: Defines what is morally right, regardless of its legal status. [4, 5]

• Example: While lying may not be illegal in every context, it can be considered unethical, especially in professional settings where it betrays trust. [5]
